Pirates Trade Johan Oviedo, Acquire High-Profile Prospect

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed an interesting trade on Thursday.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the club had traded right-hander Johan Oviedo, left-hander Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman in exchange for outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and right-hander Jesus Travieso in a multi-player deal with the Boston Red Sox.

Oviedo, 27, made nine starts after fully recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2025, posting a 3.57 ERA, 4.92 FIP, 1.22 WHIP, 42 strikeouts and 23 walks in 40 1/3 innings — his strongest stretch since being traded from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022.

Garcia, 22, was ranked as Boston’s No. 6 prospect by Baseball America, and went 1-for-7 with five strikeouts, two walks and one double in a brief stint for the club from Aug. 21-29. Garcia slashed .271/.334/.498 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs across 81 games with Triple-A Worcester.

Travieso, 18, made just two appearances for Low-A Salem in 2025.
