Steelers Rumors: Darius Slay Claimed By Multiple Teams

Slay was claimed by both the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t want to continue doing business with cornerback Darius Slay — but at least two other teams did.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills both put in claims for the veteran cornerback on Wednesday, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The Bills were awarded the player due to having priority in the waiver wire, narrowly edging out the defending Super Bowl champions as they were looking for a reunion.

Slay’s movement comes after being released by the Steelers on Tuesday, which in and of itself came after he was made a healthy scratch during a matchup with his new team last Sunday. Asante Samuel Jr., who was tabbed to replace the veteran cornerback in that game, also replaced him on the active roster after being signed from the practice squad.

“Really it was less about Slay and more about getting an opportunity to see Asante Samuel,” Tomlin said following the game. “… Slay has missed some time due to a variety of injuries. … It was about getting a look at the guy that’s started a lot of games in this league. And we did, and we liked some of the things that we saw.”

Slay has appeared in 187 total games across 13 seasons with the Detroit Lions, Eagles and Steelers, and has racked up 655 tackles, 28 interceptions to go along with his six Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors in 2017.
