Steelers, Veteran Defender Mutually Agree To Part Ways

Darius Slay Jr. was waived by Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving on from one of their recent free agent splashes…

Darius Slay, who was scratched from the lineup prior to Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, has agreed with the club on a mutual parting of ways, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Slay will now be allowed to pursue opportunities to play elsewhere, and plans on doing so, according to agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.

Asante Samuel Jr., who was tabbed to replace the veteran cornerback last weekend, will be signed from the practice squad to the active roster, according to Tom Pelissero.

“Really it was less about Slay and more about getting an opportunity to see Asante Samuel,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said. “… Slay has missed some time due to a variety of injuries. … It was about getting a look at the guy that’s started a lot of games in this league. And we did, and we liked some of the things that we saw.”

Slay has appeared in 187 total games across 13 seasons with the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Steelers. It’ll remain to be seen if another team is added to that list before the conclusion of the 2025.
