Steelers ‘Mutually Part Ways’ With All-Pro Corner Darius Slay

Asante Samuel Jr. was signed to the active roster in a corresponding move

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Tuesday that they would be mutually parting ways with All-Pro corner Darius Slay.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news on X.

“Steelers and CB Darius Slay have mutually agreed to part ways, Slay’s agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told ESPN,” Schefter said. “Slay is interested in continuing to play, and will consider signing with other teams. But his time in Pittsburgh has come to an end.”

Slay is in his 13th season in the NFL, but lasted just 12 games with the Steelers.

The six-time Pro Bowler has posted just a 58.3 PFF grade through 13 weeks, ranking 71st among 110 qualifying cornerbacks.

Slay was playing on a one-year, $10 million deal he signed this past March. He was the ninth-highest-paid player on the Steelers’ roster.

Head coach Mike Tomlin explained why Slay was a healthy scratch during Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills despite his lofty contract.

“Really, it was less about Slay and more about getting an opportunity to see Asante Samuel (Jr.),” Tomlin said. “He’s a global NFL starter-type that has been on our practice squad. This time of year attrition sets in, you step into stadiums week in and week out, things happen. We certainly wanted to have an opportunity to see him in a stadium before we maybe had to make a decision on him, before someone else forced our hand regarding a decision.”

The Steelers signed Asante Samuel Jr. to the active roster in a corresponding move Tuesday.
