The Steelers need to develop a long-term strategy for the quarterback position as they look ahead. At 41 years old, Aaron Rodgers is on a one-year contract, so he’s not the ultimate solution for their future.
However, Pittsburgh could look to draft its future quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, although it might not be in a position to select one high since it is likely to be a playoff team or come close to making the playoffs.
If the Steelers are considering moving up in the draft to secure a quarterback, they might trade pass rusher T.J. Watt. According to Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, Watt could be Pittsburgh’s most valuable trade asset this offseason.
“Hear me out here. Pittsburgh may be entering at least a mini rebuild, especially if Aaron Rodgers retires, and Watt is probably beyond his prime at 31,” Gagnon wrote on Friday. “The team can save at least $12 million by dealing him away, and the Steelers have plenty of other younger edge-rushing weapons in Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer.”
The Steelers may need to consider trading Watt if he could yield substantial draft capital, which could help Pittsburgh secure its next franchise quarterback.

As Watt approaches the later stages of his career, trading him during this offseason might be the most brilliant move for Pittsburgh’s future.
