Report: Jets Bench Former Steelers Quarterback Justin Fields

Fields has 1,259 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns and one interception across nine games this season

Justin Fields’ first season with the New York Jets has been uneven at best.

Now, Gang Green is reportedly benching the former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback ahead of their Week 12 game vs. the Baltimore Ravens.

“The Jets are making a QB change, going with Tyrod Taylor as Justin Fields goes to the bench,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport wrote on Bluesky. “Coach Aaron Glenn hinted last week that this might be forthcoming. Now, he’s informed both parties.”

Fields has recorded a 62.7% completion percentage with 1,259 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns and one interception across nine games this season, leading the Jets to a 2-7 record. The 26-year-old Fields missed Week 3 due to a concussion and has posted an 89.5 passer rating this fall, adding 71 carries for 383 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

After registering three 100-plus passer ratings in his first four contests this year, the former 11th overall pick hasn’t reached the plateau in his last five games.

Fields spent the first three seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears before being traded to the Steelers in March 2024 for a 2025 sixth-round pick.

The two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year battled Russell Wilson for Pittsburgh’s starting job during 2024 training camp and opened the campaign as the starter. Fields helped the Steelers go 4-2 to begin the year while recording five passing touchdowns against one interception, before Wilson took over under center in Week 7.

Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets in the offseason.
