Penguins Star Erik Karlsson Opens Up On Relationship With Kris Letang

Karlsson is 'happy' to play with Letang

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a big move to acquire star defenseman Erik Karlsson in 2023 to add some more offense to the backend.

Although the Penguins haven’t made the playoffs with Karlsson, the Swede has been an impactful defenseman for the team. He’s also formed a bond with Kris Letang, who has been the leader of the Penguins’ blue line for years. Although the two don’t play together often, Karlsson said he’s relied on Letang, as the two have formed a great friendship.

“Tanger’s a great guy,” Karlsson said to NHL.com reporter Wes Crosby. “He’s done most of the things that anyone could wish for in a career. He’s still going strong. I think that we respect each other equally, and we’re good friends off the ice. I think our relationship has been great from Day 1.

“We want to do what’s best for the other. We’re happy for each other. We’re trying to find a way where we’re both equally happy, and I think we’ve done a good job with that.”

Karlsson and Letang are both offensive defenseman, so getting to pick each other’s brains has been impactful for both players.

However, Letang is dealing with a lower-body injury and is day-to-day. But, Penguins coach Dan Muse did reveal Letang will be with Pittsburgh on their three-game road trip to California.

Pittsburgh is off to a 2-1 start and will play the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.
