Former Steelers Quarterback Has Ugly Performance In Week 6 Loss

Nine sacks and nine completions isn't ideal

The Pittsburgh Steelers enjoyed their international trip a bit more than Justin Fields.

Two weeks after Aaron Rodgers led Pittsburgh to a win in Dublin, the New York Jets traveled to London to play the Denver Broncos. They remain the NFL’s only winless team after a sloppy 13-11 loss.

It was especially a game to forget for Fields, who tallied as many completed passes as sacks (nine) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The former Steelers quarterback amassed just 45 passing yards, less than the 55 yards lost on those sacks.

The Jets mustered an anemic 82 total yards on 57 plays. Josh Dubow of the Associated Press noted that it was only the fourth time in the last 20 years an NFL team averaged less than 1.5 yards per play, and Fields was responsible for another in his first career NFL start.

New York earned just two of its eight first downs on passes. An 11-yard completion to Josh Reynolds represented the offense’s biggest play of the game.

Despite those results, the Jets still had a chance to win. They settled for two field goals on three-and-outs after a fumble recovery and long kick return gave them the ball in scoring territory during the first quarter.

Denver got called for offensive holding inside the end zone in the third quarter, putting Gang Green ahead 11-10 with a safety. Wil Lutz kicked a go-ahead field goal for the Broncos with five minutes remaining, but the Jets received the ball at their 43 with a chance to salvage an ugly victory.

Rather than attempting a 61-yard field goal, head coach Aaron Glenn kept his sputtering offense on the field for a 4th-and-8. Fields fittingly took another sack to seal the loss, dropping the Jets to 0-6.

The first half also ended in head-scratching fashion. The Jets let the clock run out before getting off another play on 4-and-1 near midfield, prompting wide receiver Garrett Wilson to exchange some seemingly heated words toward Glenn.

At this time last season, Fields led the Steelers to a 4-2 start before Mike Tomlin turned to Russell Wilson. Per SNY, Glenn chastised a reporter who asked about benching Fields for their Week 7 game against the Carolina Panthers.

“What kind of question is that?” Glenn asked. “There are guys that have bad games. That doesn’t mean you just bench him. Come on, you know better than that.”
