NHL Insider Names Penguins Goalie As Possible Breakout Star

The 24-year-old had a 25-save shutout on Tuesday

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Muse surprised many when he tabbed offseason acquisition Artrurs Silovs as the team’s starting goaltender over two-time All-Star Tristan Jarry for the season-opener on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers.

Silovs responded by earning his first career shutout in a 3-0 upset win.

The Latvian gave way to Jarry in Pittsburgh’s second game on Thursday vs. the New York Islanders, a 4-3 victory.

ESPN senior NHL writer Greg Wyshynski named Silovs as one of the league’s 30 players “poised for a breakout in 2025-26” on Friday.

“The 24-year-old earned a spot here not only for some tantalizing moments as a Canuck, but for his opening night shutout in Madison Square Garden,” Wyshynski wrote. “Silovs was named one of Team Latvia’s first six players for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.”

The Penguins host the Rangers on Saturday night and based on his perfect 25-save fall debut against New York; it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Muse turn back to Silovs for the contest.
