Aaron Rodgers Gives Blunt Review Of Performance In Steelers’ Week 3 Win

'The defense won the game'

Aaron Rodgers didn’t want any credit for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 3 win over the New England Patriots.

Pittsburgh left Gillette Stadium with a 21-14 victory, but the offense wasn’t particularly sharp on Sunday. Rodgers completed 16 of 23 passes for 139 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and the ground game mustered 64 rushing yards on 26 carries.

During an on-field interview with CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn, Rodgers praised the defense for winning the game by forcing five turnovers.

“They came out and played incredible,” Rodgers said. “We were terrible on offense after the first two drives. I didn’t have a good game. But the defense, every time, kept us in it.”

The Steelers jumped to a 14-0 lead after scoring touchdowns on each of the offense’s opening drives. However, they registered five combined yards on their ensuing five possessions.

“The defense won the game,” Rodgers declared. “This was a classic Blittsburgh performance. Hats off to those guys. Offense, we got to get in the film room and be better because we can’t have our defense save it for us every week.”

New England mustered 369 total yards to Pittsburgh’s 203, but the Steelers recovered four fumbles on Sunday. Brandin Echols, who later made a game-sealing tackle on fourth down, halted a 17-play series by picking off Drake Maye inside the end zone.

While the Patriots dominated field possession for most of the game, Pittsburgh’s defense kept them off the scoreboard at key moments.

“We came out and played well,” Rodgers said of the offense. “We got into rhythm. We were no-huddle, moved down the field and get a couple touchdowns. Then we sat on the bench for like 30 minutes. It was a long lull, and then we stopped them. Then we come out, I threw a terrible ball and we’re back in it, and they stop them again. So our defense played incredible.”

Rodgers will attempt to lead an offensive rebound when the Steelers play the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, Ireland, next Sunday. The international game starts at 9:30 a.m. ET on the NFL Network.
