The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense played well enough to win on Sunday against the New York Jets, but the performance was less than inspiring. The 32 points allowed were the fourth-most in the league through one week of the season.
Jets quarterback Justin Fields threw for 218 yards on 16 completions and ran for 48 more. On the ground, Breece Hall ran for 107 yards on 19 attempts. Despite being pressured on 11 of his 22 dropbacks, the Steelers only converted one sack. They also didn’t generate any turnovers.
On Tuesday, the Steelers reportedly added to their defense by agreeing to a deal with veteran safety Jabril Peppers, per Ian Rapoport. Peppers spent the last three seasons with the New England Patriots and was a surprise cut after the roster deadline. Safety DeShon Elliott was injured against the Jets and is expected to miss time. Peppers will fill some of the void left by Elliot.
Peppers played in the box frequently for the Patriots, where he can help against the run. The 29-year-old will join veterans Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay in the Steelers’ secondary.
