NFL Trade Idea Sees Steelers Get Quarterback, Former No. 4 Pick

Could the Steelers add another new quarterback to the roster before Week 1?

The Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the biggest moves of the NFL offseason, signing four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year contract in early June.

Could the Steelers make yet another earth-shattering move to shake up their quarterbacks room ahead of Week 1?

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay wrote “1 Trade Each NFL Team Should Propose Before The 2025 Season” on Thursday and among them was an idea seeing Pittsburgh send a 2026 third-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for quarterback Anthony Richardson.

“The Steelers may be all-in on a Super Bowl run this year following the addition of Aaron Rodgers, but they still need to keep an eye on the future with this likely to be the future Hall of Famer’s final season,” Kay wrote. “While Pittsburgh did utilize a Day 3 pick on Will Howard, the sixth-rounder is a long-term project with limited upside. The team could try to rehabilitate a signal-caller with a far higher ceiling by trading for Anthony Richardson.”

The Colts signal-caller has fallen from the highest of highs after being selected with the fourth overall pick during the 2023 NFL Draft to the lowest of lows, as he was recently named the team’s backup to Daniel Jones.

Indianapolis’ decision to give the reins to “Danny Dimes” shocked many. Jones had a brutal final two seasons with the New York Giants in 2023 and 2024, recording 10 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions across 16 games, while posting passer ratings of 70.5 and 79.4, respectively.

Richardson, like Jones, has had major issues with consistency and staying healthy in his two NFL seasons.

The 23-year-old was limited to 15 games combined in 2023 and 2024 and has recorded 11 touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and a 67.8 passer rating.

“With Richardson losing his starting role to Daniel Jones after a training camp battle, the Colts might be willing to move on from the athletic passer after two troubling seasons,” Kay wrote. “Given the Steelers managed to coax a promising performance from Justin Fields last year that led to him signing a big contract with the Jets, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Richardson play his best football yet in a black and yellow uniform. Giving up a Day 2 pick for a high-reward franchise quarterback would be well worth it.”

Following an up-and-down training camp, Rodgers is locked in as the team’s starting quarterback in 2025. Though it’s unlikely, a trade for Richardson would certainly raise eyebrows in Pittsburgh.
