Report: Steelers Signing Recently Released Defender Before Preseason Finale

He'll have a short window to earn a roster spot

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly adding a new player to the fold ahead of their final preseason game.

Pittsburgh is signing cornerback Kam Alexander, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Seattle Seahawks released the undrafted free agent last week.

Alexander led the American Athletic Conference with 15 pass breakups for UTSA in 2023 before transferring to Oregon. The first-team All-AAC defender played a limited role with the Ducks, collecting just four tackles in 12 games but registering an interception in a shutout victory over Purdue.

Alexander, who started his collegiate career at Sam Houston State, tried out for the Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons in rookie minicamps. Although he didn’t receive a contract at the time, Seattle signed him at the start of training camp.

The Seahawks released Alexander following an inauspicious preseason performance. Among his seven snaps against the Las Vegas Raiders, he allowed a 41-yard receiving touchdown to Shedrick Jackson after getting burned on a double-move.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound cornerback will get another opportunity in Pittsburgh. He’ll compete to join a remade secondary led by All-Pro offseason acquisition Jalen Ramsey.

Alexander won’t have much time to practice with his new team before the Steelers conclude their preseason against the Carolina Panthers this Thursday night. They must cut their active roster down to 53 players by next Tuesday, Aug. 26.
