Rumor: Pirates To Activate Reliever After Extended Absence

Chase Shugart is back in the big leagues

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ bullpen carousel continues to spin.

According to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, relief pitcher Chase Shugart is being activated from the injured list, with Dauri Moreta being sent to Triple-A Indianapolis as the corresponding move.

Shugart hasn’t pitched since July 7. He’s been on the injured list with knee inflammation. Over 39 innings this season, he has a 3.69 ERA and 5.91 FIP. He hasn’t struck hitters out at a high rate, but he’s kept hard contact to a minimum and stranded runners consistently.

Moreta has appeared in five games and registered a 3.86 ERA. He struck out seven of 18 batters and walked one. His slider was excellent in a small sample.

The Pirates’ bullpen has a 4.05 ERA this season, 17th best in baseball. They traded David Bednar and Caleb Ferguson at the deadline and have relied on a rotating cast in relief.
