The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense looks a lot different than it did last season. Gone are guys like Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, George Pickens and Najee Harris, with Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith being among the new faces brought to town to help take the unit to a new level.
If there is a question mark on offense for the Steelers, it’s the makeup of their wide receiver room. While Metcalf is a star and the clear No. 1 option, the rest of the room behind him doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence. Calvin Austin III seems like the No. 2 option, with the veteran Robert Woods also factoring into the mix.
One player Pittsburgh was hoping to see take a step forward during training camp is second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson. To this point, though, that hasn’t happened, and on Thursday, it led to Rodgers sending Wilson a strong message while speaking to reporters.
“We gotta get Ro out of his head a little bit,” Rodgers said. “He’s such a good kid, he cares so much about whether it’s my approval or he’s doing it right. He’s just gotta trust himself because he’s so damn talented. The more he can play free and not think out there, the better he’s gonna play. The more he can just trust what he’s got, and then just go out and react, the better he’s gonna play.”
The Steelers selected Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he only ended up playing in one game due to a slew of injuries he dealt with. After essentially redshirting his rookie season, Wilson was expected to step up this season, but according to Rodgers, he’s been getting too fixated on his play to really make an impact.

Rodgers is trying to loosen Wilson up, and who knows, this could be precisely what the former Michigan Wolverines star needs to get on the right track. While Rodgers and several other starters won’t be playing in their first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night, Wilson will be among the players looking to shine in this contest.
