Steelers Sign Former Rival Quarterback Following Rookie’s Injury

Logan Woodside returns to the AFC North

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback room received a new addition on Thursday — and for good reason.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced the club signed veteran journeyman Logan Woodside, who will join the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Will Howard, Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. Pittsburgh also signed veteran offensive lineman Andrus Peat and waived long snapper Tucker Addington and offensive lineman Nick Boeker, but that isn’t the point here so we’ll just move right past that.

Woodside, 30, joins Pittsburgh following stops with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons — the latter two of which he worked alongside Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

The Steelers bring him aboard as not just another arm in camp, but an option during the preseason as Howard — who suffered what is considered a week-to-week injury after breaking a finger on his throwing hand, is now sidelined — and Rodgers — an old man — aren’t expected to play very much in those contests.

“He just got here,” Tomlin said when asked if Woodside would play in preseason games, per Steelers Depot. “I know that he has a past experience with Arthur and so I’m not gonna close the door on it, but we’ll see.”

It’s never easy implementing someone into a new system, but that familiarity should make possible for him to see some reps alongside Rudolph and Thompson. Pittsburgh would rather avoid ever having to rely on that trio during the regular season, but for now, that’s where the club is at.
