Steelers Sign Defensive Back 28 Years After Drafting His Father

It's been nearly three decades since the defender's father was drafted by the Steelers

It’s been 28 years since the Pittsburgh Steelers selected former defensive back Daryl Porter in the sixth round of the 1997 NFL Draft.

While the now-51-year-old never played a game with the Steelers across his five NFL seasons, another member of the Porter family could take the field in Pittsburgh in 2025.

The Steelers signed former West Virginia and Miami defensive back Daryl Porter Jr. on Tuesday.

The son of the former Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans defender went undrafted in the spring. Porter Jr. then signed with the Buffalo Bills and was released during training camp.

Porter Jr. spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Mountaineers, recording 40 solo tackles and one interception across 19 games. He then transferred to the Hurricanes program and was a two-year starter during his three seasons in Miami.
