Najee Harris Injury News Provides Few Answers On Former Steeler

When will Harris return to Chargers practice?

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh gave an injury update on running back Najee Harris on Monday and again, offered little indication that the former Pro Bowler will be returning to the field soon.

“#Chargers RB Najee Harris is improving and walking laps around the field as part of his rehab, per Jim Harbaugh. But no timetable for his return from what his agent previously labeled a ‘superficial’ eye injury as of yet,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo posted on X.

Harris suffered his eye injury one month ago during a July Fourth fireworks accident and was subsequently placed on the non-football injury list.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said in late July that the 27-year-old was “doing better every day” and “getting better.”

“We’re going to be cautious and precautious with it and let him get healthy. There’s no rush, it’s early. We came into camp early, we got a long preseason to go so there’s no sense in rushing anyone out there,” Hortiz added at the time.

Harris signed a one-year contract with Los Angeles in March after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He posted at least 1,000 rushing yards and six touchdowns in each campaign with the Steelers and was a Pro Bowler during his 2021 rookie season.

Harris has been one of the most durable backs in the NFL this decade, suiting up in all 68 regular season contests since entering the league, but now his health is in question. With Harris sidelined, the Chargers have first-round rookie Omarion Hampton, fourth-year pro Hassan Haskins and second-year player Kimani Vidal listed on their running backs depth chart.
