Why Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Doesn’t Put Much Thought Into This Narrative

Tomlin is more concerned with Pittsburgh's current group

Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Mike Tomlin has never suffered a losing season as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tomlin, who enters his 19th season in Pittsburgh, is an impressive 293-183 in his career. The Steelers have three seasons with a .500 win percentage while the other 15 campaigns have seen the Steelers win nine or more games.

Tomlin, however, doesn’t put much thought into the narrative.

“It doesn’t mean a lot as I sit here today,” Tomlin told NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt during Steelers training camp. “Because, for me, there’s so much to be concerned about relative to now. Let’s be honest, most of these guys that I coach it doesn’t resonate with. Nineteen, 18 years ago a lot of these guys were in car seats. So, they respect it, but it’s not something that’s of value for them so why would I put my business on this collective?

Tomlin is concerned with the 2025 group, not any of those in the past.

“I’m just focused on this collective and what we can do together. I think I owe them that,’ he said. “At the end of the day I doubt that anybody cares. It’s just a nice, cool thing for you guys can talk about and use as an intro when you’re talking about me, or hope for my demise. Either way it’s sport entertainment. It’s not big on my radar.”

Nevertheless, it’s fair to believe the veteran head coach is hoping to maintain such streak with for a 19th consecutive campaign.
