JuJu Smith-Schuster hasn’t played for the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2021, and his tenure with the team didn’t exactly come to a smooth end. Despite that, he still has love for the Steelers and their fans, even though he’s currently playing for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into the 2025 campaign.
A second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Smith-Schuster was an instant star for the Steelers, forming an elite wide receiver duo alongside Antonio Brown. Smith-Schuster earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2018 when he caught 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns, and it seemed like he was set to become a superstar playmaker.
Instead, Smith-Schuster’s production took a hit once Brown forced his way out of town. Of course, a slew of injuries did not help, but the Steelers opted to let their former star receiver walk in free agency after the 2021 season, which led to him signing a one-year, $10.75 million deal with the Chiefs.
Smith-Schuster won a Super Bowl that season before signing a three-year, $33 million contract with the New England Patriots, but he only lasted one season there before returning to the Chiefs. After a crushing Super Bowl defeat, Smith-Schuster re-signed with Kansas City, and he’s set to help them try to return to the top of the mountain in the NFL.
All along the way, Steelers fans have kept tabs on Smith-Schuster, even though he ultimately flamed out for them after a hot start. Despite what was sometimes a tension-filled relationship between Smith-Schuster and Pittsburgh, he recently revealed that he still loves Steelers Nation.

“I love Pittsburgh,” Smith-Schuster said when a Steelers fan approached him for an autograph after one of Kansas City’s recent training camp practices.
In a limited role last season with the Chiefs, Smith-Schuster caught 18 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Given how many injuries their wide receiver room dealt with last year, though, his presence proved crucial down the stretch for Kansas City.
Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown are leading the Chiefs’ wide receiver depth chart heading into 2025, but Smith-Schuster figures to stick around as a secondary target behind them. He may not have played for the Steelers in years, but fans will surely be rooting for him, unless he’s going up against his old team.
