New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field during the team’s training camp practice on Thursday morning.
The former Pittsburgh Steelers signal-caller went down with an apparent lower leg injury, according to a report by ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Per Cimini’s report, Fields suffered the injury after rolling to the right and tossing an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert before pulling up.
“Fields went down, sat on the ground briefly and limped off the field with the assistance of a trainer,” the Jets beat writer said. “He spent a few minutes in the injury tent before a cart arrived on the scene. Fields was taken to the locker room, sitting in the passenger seat of the cart, before walking into the team facility.”
Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor replaced Fields under center in team drills following the injury.
Head coach Aaron Glenn discussed the situation with reporters afterward, saying that Fields suffered a toe injury, yet the severity was unknown.

“Jets QB Justin Fields, who left today’s training camp practice on a cart after suffering a lower leg injury, is dealing with a toe injury, per coach Aaron Glenn. Glenn indicated that, by the way the play unfolded, he believes someone stepped on Fields’ foot,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted on Bluesky.
The former 11th overall pick spent the first three seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears before being traded to the Steelers in March 2024 for a 2025 sixth-round pick.
Fields battled Russell Wilson for Pittsburgh’s lead quarterback job last summer and opened the campaign as the starter. Fields helped the team go 4-2 to begin the year while recording five passing touchdowns against one interception, before Wilson took over under center in Week 7.
