Steelers Viewed As ‘Logical Landing Spot’ For Disgruntled 49ers Wideout

Jauan Jennings is unhappy with his contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers previously pursued a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver who was unhappy with his contract, and the belief is that Mike Tomlin’s team could do it for the second time in as many offseasons.

Niners wide receiver Jauan Jennings is unhappy with his contract situation, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 28-year-old, who’s coming off a career year, either wants a new contract or wants to be traded to a team that will pay him.

While it’s no certainty the 49ers will trade Jennings, especially since Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from a torn Achilles, it’s still a possibility. And the Pittsburgh Steelers are among the viable landing spots after completely altering their wide receiver room this offseason.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin listed the Steelers among the “logical landing spots” for Jennings.

“Why not?” Benjamin wrote. “The Steelers haven’t been shy about their interest in bolstering Aaron Rodgers’ supporting cast, even with DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith already plugged in as new weapons at receiver and tight end, respectively. And Jennings might cost a lot less than another premium target. Better yet, he brings the kind of rugged physicality and positional versatility that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith would likely prefer. You can bet Rodgers would appreciate the big-game savviness Jennings also brings to the table, having played for several title contenders.”

Ironically, Jennings finds himself in a similar spot to Smith. Smith requested a new deal from the Miami Dolphins after a career year, and when that request was denied, he requested to be traded and landed in Pittsburgh. Perhaps the same fate awaits Jennings.
