How Pirates Ensured Paul Skenes Would Pitch In MLB All-Star Game

Skenes hasn't thrown more than 90 pitches in any of his last three starts

Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes is expected to pitch in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park next Tuesday, in part because the organization ensured Skenes would be able to.

Appearing on 93.7 “The Fan” on Tuesday, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington shared the team altered Skenes pitching calendar to allow him to pitch in Atlanta, per 93.7 radio host Andrew Fillipponi.

Skenes has not pitched more than six innings since June 8. He has thrown less than 90 pitches in each of his last three starts, including a 78-pitch outing against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

The 2024 Rookie of the Year has been dominant this season despite his 4-7 record in 19 starts. Skenes has compiled a 1.94 ERA in 116 innings with 125 strikeouts compared to 30 walks.
