Génesis Cabrera is sticking in the National League Central.
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed the left-handed pitcher on Thursday, per an official statement, picking him after he was designated for assignment this week by the Chicago Cubs .
Cabrera, 28, has played for four teams (St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Cubs) since making his MLB debut in 2019. It’s been an up-and-down stretch over the last couple of seasons, though, with the southpaw putting together a 6.35 ERA in 17 innings this season to go along with a rather pedestrian 21.1% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate.
Cabrera will undoubtedly provide a boost in the short-term, becoming just the second left-handed option in the bullpen alongside Caleb Ferguson.
Pittsburgh made a couple of corresponding moves, optioning right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks and designated right-hander Hunter Stratton for assignment on Thursday.
