Pirates Recall Outfielder As 27th Man For Doubleheader

The Pirates have an extra bat on hand Thursday

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers will play a doubleheader today after game two of the series was postponed due to heavy rain in the Detroit area on Wednesday.

Prior to game one, the Pirates announced they have added outfielder Jack Suwinski to serve as the team’s 27th man during Thursday’s twin billing. Suwinski was demoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on April 24 after batting .128 in 39 at-bats.

The 26-year-old was not in the lineup for game one, but could see action off the bench or in game two at 5:40 p.m ET. Suwinski’s only two seasons removed from slugging 26 home runs and driving in 74 RBI during a breakout sophomore season in 2023. Suwinski has most recently split time shuttling between Triple-A and Pittsburgh after struggling at the dish over parts of the last two seasons.

The Pirates are trailing the Tigers 7-0 through four innings in game one of the double header. Left hander Andrew Heaney surrendered eight hits and six runs through his first four innings of work, while the Pirates offense has been slow to get anything going so far against Tigers starter and 2024 American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal.

The Pirates and Tigers will conclude their three-game series later this evening with Paul Skenes (4-6) opposing a Tigers starter yet to be announced. Skenes will be looking to get back in the win column following three consecutive no-decisions dating back to June 6.
