Penguins Lock In Returning Forward For 2025-26 Season

The Penguins re-sign another forward

The Penguins continued their busy offseason on Tuesday, re-signing forward Joona Koppanen to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced in a press release.

Koppanen’s contract is valued at $775,000 at the NHL level and goes through the 2025-26 season. The move comes after signing returner Boko Imama and Melvin Fernstrom on Friday.

Koppanen skated in just 11 games with Pittsburgh during the 2024-25 season, scoring one goal. He played a majority of the season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. In 56 games with the AHL team, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound forward scored eight goals and 15 assists, totaling 23 points.

Prior to playing in the Penguins organization, Koppanen was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Draft. The forward eventually cracked the NHL roster with the Bruins during the 2022-23 season, where he played five games, getting an assist in that time.

Bringing back a familiar face, the Penguins continue to add depth and size to their forward group as the organization continues to try to bring the team back to playoff contention.
