Penguins Legend Jokes About Potential Return To Pittsburgh

You're never too old to play hockey

You’re never too old to play professional hockey, according to Jaromir Jagr.

The former Penguins winger posted to his Instagram that he was returning to Pittsburgh for a trip. During his trip, he went to PPG Paints Arena to look at his retired number in the rafters.

The Penguins retired Jagr’s No. 68 in February of 2024, becoming just the third Pittsburgh player to receive the honor. The 53-year-old started his career with Pittsburgh where he was drafted in 1990 and played for 11 seasons before being traded to the Washington Capitals.

In his 11 seasons, Jagr played 806 regular-season games and totaled 1,079 points on 439 goals and 604 assists. He also helped lead the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final wins in 1991 and 1992.

Playing for a number of teams, Jagr retired during the 2017-18 season from the NHL with the Calgary Flames but he laced up the skates again shortly after. He went on that same year to play for Rytíři Kladno of the Czech Extraliga where he played as a winger while also being an owner. Playing until the 2024-25 season, Jagr decided to hang up his skates after a hockey career that lasted over three decades.

With all his accomplishments, when Jagr walked into his Pittsburgh hotel room and saw a bag with clothes, he thought the Penguins would be asking him back to the organization as a player.

“There’s some stuff for workout and I was thinking they just want to talk but I guess they want me to workout,” Jagr joked on his Instagram. “I was hoping they know what kind of player they are getting, I was playing professional hockey for the last 37 years.”
