Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed Aaron Rodgers would have been a possibility for Los Angeles should things have went sideways with Matthew Stafford.
There were early-offseason rumblings that LA could trade Stafford given he was seeking a reworked contract. The veteran reportedly received contract proposals from the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders while the Pittsburgh Steelers showed interest. Stafford ultimately agreed to a reworked deal with the Rams in early May, but if the two sides didn’t iron out the details, McVay and company would have pursued Rodgers.
“Our first priority, which was consistently communicated, was let’s work something out with Matthew and we were very fortunate that it worked out that way,” McVay told NFL Media’s “Good Morning Football” on Wednesday. “If that wasn’t able to occur, then that was definitely conversations and a possibility for us.
“I have a ton of respect for the body of work,” McVay continued. “I’ve gotten to know Aaron and really enjoy the conversations and just the approach, the way that he thinks about the game and in life. So, that was a possibility. But our first priority was always to be able to get Matthew back.”
After months of speculation with Rodgers on the open market, the 41-year-old signed with the Steelers ahead of mandatory minicamp. He’s participated in the only mandatory session of the offseason.

“I know there are a lot of people in Pittsburgh that are happy that’s finally come to fruition,” McVay said. “I’m a big fan of his.”
Rodgers signed a one-year deal with a maximum value of $19.5 million while Stafford reportedly will receive $44 million in 2025 with the potential to earn another $40 million in 2026.
