Pirates’ Endy Rodriguez Exits Game Early With Injury

Rodriguez has already spent time on the injured list this season

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Endy Rodriguez was removed from Friday’s win in just the second inning.

The Pirates described the injury as right elbow discomfort and announced he would be further evaluated by the medical staff.

Henry Davis took over for Rodriguez as the only catcher on the active roster. Isiah Kiner-Falefa previously spent time behind the plate defensively, but hasn’t caught since 2019 and is unlikely to be a candidate to catch, although he could serve as the emergency catcher in a pinch.

If the injury to Rodriguez is serious, Davis will likely catch the lion’s share of innings going forward. The team may have to look outside the organization for depth at catcher due to previous injuries at the position.

Joey Bart, who’s appeared in 38 games at catcher for the Pirates this season, has returned to baseball activities but remains in the concussion protocol. Bart is hitting .240 with one home run this season. He’s had trouble controlling the running game, catching just six of 27 base stealers.

Brett Wilson is the only other player in the organization who has caught at the major league level. He appeared in 36 games behind the plate for the Padres over 2023 and 2024. Wilson is not currently on the 40-man roster, so Pittsburgh will need to clear a space should they choose to activate him.
