Pirates Rookie Records Shutout In First Win As Starter

Mike Burrows tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings

Following a pair of shaky outings to start his major league season, Pirates rookie Mike Burrows tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings to record his first win of the 2025 season.

Burrows improved to 1-2 with Pittsburgh’s 3-0 victory Wednesday night over the Houston Astros at PNC Park. It marked his first big-league victory as a starter and second overall in his career, with the first coming last season in his MLB debut when he pitched three innings of relief against the Yankees.

The 25-year-old right-hander took a significant step forward after giving up eight runs in 8 1/3 innings across his first two starts.

“You learn through the minor leagues when you’re coming up and how to handle different situations,” Pirates manager Don Kelly told reporters, per SNP’s postgame coverage. “You get to the big leagues and a little bit more, lights are brighter, and there’s a lot more pressure that you feel, and that pressure’s a privilege to go out there and do that. I think we’ve seen him learn how to slow it down, learn how to slow it down in those first two outings.”
