How Mason Rudolph Feels About Uncertainty In Steelers QB Room: ‘It’s Normal’

'This is the NFL and I'm used to all the controversy'

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a trio of quarterback options to choose from, but no signs of a clear-cut starter yet.

Mason Rudolph, who signed a two-year, $7.5 million deal to rejoin Pittsburgh, understands the reality of the team. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields walked, and the organization made it abundantly clear that Aaron Rodgers is No. 1 on its wish list. Meanwhile, the Week 1 Steelers starter might not be who anyone expected at the start of the offseason.

“This is the NFL and I’m used to all the controversy that the quarterback position brings,” Rudolph said in a team-conducted interview. “It’s normal. It’s expected. I know that the Steelers traditionally go to training camp with four quarterbacks. I’ve known they’re going to add somebody, but it’s just a question of who it will be. I can’t control that. What I can control is how I’m gonna work and lead the offense and take advantage of every rep I’m gonna get this spring.”

Pittsburgh selected Rudolph in the third round (76th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, back when Ben Roethlisberger was still the team’s starting quarterback. Rudolph spent four seasons with the Steelers, logging 13 starts before departing for a brief one-year run with the Tennessee Titans last season.

The 29-year-old admitted that returning to Pittsburgh was always something on his mind.

“It’s exciting,” Rudolph said. “I’ve been thrilled to be back with a lot of dear friends and teammates, and the coaching staff that I know quite well, and a city that I know even better. So it’s been a good couple of months.”

Rudolph continued: “I always felt like there could be a reunion at some point, but I didn’t think it’d be this quick. But I’m excited and grateful to (Art) Rooney and Omar (Khan) and Mike (Tomlin) for getting me back here, and I’m excited about the team we’ve got here together.”
