Steelers Linebacker Supports Aaron Rodgers Amid Uncertain Free Agency

'When I was little, I was a big fan of Rodgers'

The Pittsburgh Steelers still have Aaron Rodgers on their mind, and that spans from the organization’s brass to the locker room.

During Pittsburgh’s first day of organized team activities on Tuesday, linebacker Patrick Queen considered the idea of welcoming Rodgers aboard — and was sold. The Steelers have a trio of quarterback options currently at their disposal in Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Skylar Thompson, but Queen admittedly holds a bias for Rodgers.

“I’m fine with the guys that we got right now,” Queen told reporters, per Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune. “But the little fan in me, when I was little, I was a big fan of Rodgers. So it would be dope to have him on the team and stuff, but at the same time, the three guys we got right now, I’ll roll with them.”

Pittsburgh met with Rodgers two months ago, right after the team acquired DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and signed him to a five-year, $150 million contract extension. Hopes were — and remain — high across the franchise, as Rodgers and Metcalf were spotted conducting a throwing session at UCLA. So far, nothing has amounted from the meet-and-greet with Rodgers, and with time ticking, the Steelers might have to cut their losses.

The possibility that Rodgers calls it a career after 20 seasons remains in play.

Rudolph, an unproven starter, and Howard, an incoming rookie selected in the sixth round of this year’s draft, are the premier candidates currently for Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. It’s not the ideal list of options, especially considering the organization hasn’t won a playoff game in the past nine seasons and Metcalf claimed, before being traded, that joining a contender was at the forefront of his priorities in the offseason.

It’s been a questionable approach for a team that had two capable starters in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to toss all its eggs into the Rodgers basket while keeping all fingers crossed.

Perhaps Queen’s kind words will reach Rodgers’ radar and sway the 41-year-old to make a decision — and soon.
