So many signs point to Aaron Rodgers signing with the Steelers soon. If the future Pro Football Hall of Famer wants to play this season, Pittsburgh seemingly is his only practical option at this point.
But if Rodgers doesn’t land in the Steel City, the storied franchise reportedly could pivot to a different veteran quarterback.
“Kirk Cousins could be a viable Plan B,” Jeremy Fowler recently said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” as transcribed by the New York Post. “After making some calls today, I do believe he’s been on their radar. If something were to fall through with Rodgers, certainly they could reconvene, call Atlanta, and see if they could shake something out. But right now, Rodgers is their guy.”
Cousins wouldn’t be a seamless acquisition for the Steelers — or any other team — after signing a four-year, $180 million contract in March 2024. Not only would Pittsburgh have to figure out a trade with Atlanta, but it would all but surely have to have a potentially difficult conversation with the Falcons about eating salary. At this point, it’s virtually impossible to justify paying a steep price for a 36-year-old QB who was benched last season.
But again, the Steelers most likely won’t have to give serious thought to a potential Cousins deal. Rodgers feels like a lock to lead Mike Tomlin’s offense.
