Pirates Pitcher Jared Jones To Undergo Elbow Surgery

A timetable for return will be determined after the pitcher's surgery

Pirates pitcher Jared Jones elected to have surgery Wednesday.

Pittsburgh senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk announced the news before the Pirates’ matchup against the Cincinnati Reds at PNC Park. Jones started the season on the injured list, and a decision on surgery was made after contemplating multiple options.

“After a lot of contemplation, a lot of learning from experts from in and out of the industry, ultimately, Jared and his team, in support of the Pirates, decided to proceed with surgery,” Tomczyk told reporters, as seen on SportsNet Pittsburgh. “Surgery to the right elbow-forearm complex. That surgery is happening (Wednesday). Now out of fairness to Jared and his team, we learn of the details of the specifics of the surgery and ultimately the prognosis and the timeframe for return.”

Tomczyk noted the team and Jones wanted to reach a mutual mindset about how to handle the 23-year-old’s elbow injury. The right-hander had a good rookie season, as he recorded a 4.14 ERA in 121 2/3 innings along with 132 strikeouts. He and Paul Skenes were expected to be a one-two punch for the Pirates’ rotation.

However, Jones will continue to spend this season on the sidelines and hope to come back stronger for Pittsburgh.
