Pirates Claim Utility Man Off Waivers Before Series Against Phillies

Enmanuel Valdez was transferred to the 60-day injured list

The Pittsburgh Pirates did some roster shuffling before opening a series with the in-state rival Philadelphia Phillies.

Pittsburgh claimed infielder/outfielder Michael Helman off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals this week, the club announced.

Helman was in his first season with the Cardinals after being traded by the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations on Feb. 6. St. Louis stashed the 28-year-old in Triple-A Memphis, where he slashed .185/.260/.292 with four doubles and one home run across 18 total appearances this season.

Enmanuel Valdez, who was placed on the 10-day injured list May 9, was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room for the newcomer on the 40-man roster. Valdez hit .209 with a .657 OPS, four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 12 RBIs prior to hitting the shelf with shoulder inflammation.
