The Pirates announced additions to Don Kelly’s staff Friday.
Chris Truby and Gene Lamont joined the major league coaching staff ahead of Pittsburgh’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Truby, Triple-A Indy’s manager, will serve as a coach, and Lamont will serve as special advisor to Kelly. Mike Rabelo will continue as third base coach and expand his role on the bench. Shawn Bowman will take over as Indy’s manager.
Truby is a former big leaguer who last played for Triple-A Indy before he announced his retirement as a player in 2007. He went into coaching in 2008 and joined Pittsburgh when he was named minor league infield coordinator in 2022. He took over as manager for the club’s Triple-A affiliate later that year.
Lamont played for the Detroit Tigers in the 1970s, and he was a Pirates coach in the ’80s and ’90s, notably serving as third base coach for Jim Leyland in 1986. He first became a manager for the Chicago White Sox in 1992 and won the American League Manager of the Year award in 1993. He became Pittsburgh’s manager in 1997 before he was let go in 2000. The 78-year-old spent most of the 2000s as a coach and was rumored to return to managing, most recently with the Boston Red Sox in 2011.
That wealth of experience should provide a guide for first-time manager Kelly as he tries to navigate the Pirates through this season.
