Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby received a familiar honor ahead of the 2025 IIHF World Championship.
Crosby will be the captain for Team Canada… again.
It’s a familiar role for the legendary skater, who first received the honor at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The 2025 IIHF World Championship takes place between May 9-25 in Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark. Nathan MacKinnon and Ryan O’Reilly will serve as alternate captains.
“It is an honour to be named captain for the 2025 IIHF World Championship on a team that has so many great leaders and players, and I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada at Men’s Worlds for the first time since 2015,” Crosby said in a team-provided press release. “Nathan and Ryan are amazing leaders on and off the ice, and I look forward to serving on the leadership group with them. Our entire team is excited to play for Team Canada and wear the Maple Leaf with pride as we attempt to accomplish our goal of winning a gold medal.”
Team Canada got off to a hot start in the tournament, shutting out Slovenia, 4-0, on Saturday.
