Patriots Legend Weighs In On Aaron Rodgers-Steelers Saga

Jason McCourty said Rodgers would be an uprade in the QB room

The NFL offseason is rolling. The Pittsburgh Steelers already held their voluntary workouts, which are limited to strength and conditioning. Yet, Aaron Rodgers has still not decided on his future.

Despite playing the waiting game, New England Patriots Super Bowl champion cornerback Jason McCourty believes the Steelers players will welcome Rodgers with open arms when and if he signs with Pittsburgh during a recent appearance on “The Jim Rome Show.”

“Man, it’s frustrating. I think for guys like Cam Heyward, TJ Watt, some of those older players in that locker room, you want to have a response,” McCourty said. “But, I think at the same time, we always would say it as players, ‘control what you can control.’ For them, you’re looking at their roster; you could really use a guy like Aaron Rodgers.

“So, as much as you hate the fact that you’re playing the waiting game, he’s not giving you an answer. He’s not even saying whether he wants to play or not next year. When he does make that decision, if it is to continue to play next season, and if it is for the Pittsburgh Steelers, you’re gonna be sitting there with your arms wide open, welcoming him in.”

McCourty added: “They need that veteran presence in that quarterback room, and they need a guy that can come in and that can compete. I know a lot of people look at Rodgers’ numbers last year or the last few years, you can say, ‘Alright, he’s slipped back, he’s not the same quarterback he used to be when he was a four-time MVP.’ But, you look at the quarterback play for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the last several years at the very end of Big Ben’s (Roethlisberger) career, and what’s followed afterwards, Aaron Rodger’s season last year with the Jets would be an upgrade over what they’ve had in recent memory at the quarterback position.”

He isn’t wrong. The Steelers have Mason Rudolph as their current starter, and Rodgers would definitely be an immediate upgrade at the position.
