The Pirates added infield depth before their three-game series against the San Diego Padres.
Pittsburgh on Friday recalled infielder Liover Peguero from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room on the 26-man roster, Derek Shelton’s side optioned right-handed pitcher Hunter Stratton to Indianapolis following Thursday’s loss to the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park.
Peguero will make his season debut for the Pirates after starting the season in Triple-A. The 24-year-old hit one home run and collected 12 RBIs off a .691 OPS in 24 games with Indianapolis this season. He’ll hope to give Pittsburgh an offensive spark and carve out a role in the lineup.
The Pirates recalled Stratton after they placed pitcher Dennis Santana on the Major League Bereavement/Family Medical Emergency List on Monday. Stratton gave up four runs off six hits in 1 2/3 innings in his stint with Pittsburgh.
First pitch for Pittsburgh’s matchup against San Diego is scheduled at 6:40 p.m. ET on Apple TV+.
