The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs experienced a scary incident Wednesday when a fan fell onto the field from the right field bleachers at PNC Park.
Pirates chairman Bob Nutting issued a statement regarding the incident Thursday, as did the organization immediately following the game. Pirates manager Derek Shelton and Cubs manager Craig Counsell, who were in their respective dugouts during the incident, also issued statements postgame.
“I want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game and thank both our medical staff, the Cubs’ medical staff, EMS, everybody that got to the gentleman, and just ask everybody to keep him in your prayers,” Shelton said postgame, per Alex Stumpf of MLB.com.
“I hope the gentleman’s OK,” Counsell said, per Stumpf. “I’m thinking about his family and him right now. Obviously scary. I didn’t see it happen, but I saw it out there after the play. I just hope everything turns out OK.”
Pittsburgh Public Safety posted an update to X on Thursday, saying that the incident is being treated as accidental, and that the fan is still in critical condition. Pittsburgh Police do not anticipate providing any additional updates to the public.
