It was bound to happen after his superstar breakout, but Pirates fans are naming their children after Paul Skenes, and the star pitcher met one of them Tuesday.
A pair of Pittsburgh fans arrived at PNC Park early to catch Skenes warming up. One of them held up a sign that read, “We named our son after you Skenes.” Of course, the right-hander and fans got a nice kick out of it, and the 22-year-old signed a hat for the fans. Skenes even signed the baby’s onesie.
That was just part of how much fans are captivated by the All-Star. Fans made their own moustaches to emulate Skenes now-iconic facial hair. And there was a line of fans who waited to get their hands on a Skenes bobblehead that went past Clemente Bridge and into Downtown Pittsburgh. You also can’t forget the hype around the one-of-a-kind Skenes card that sold for a lot of money.
Tuesday probably won’t be the last time fans reveal they named their child after Skenes, and the reigning National League Rookie of the Year has loved every bit of the fans’ appreciation for him.
