Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin welcomed a new member to his coaching staff for 2025.
The Steelers hired Luke Smith as their quality control coach, according to the team’s website. Smith is the nephew of special teams coordinator Danny Smith and spent the last eight seasons as an assistant for Duquesne’s football team. He initially was hired as the program’s defensive assistant before being moved up to wide receivers coach in 2018.
It was insinuated months ago that the Steelers would aim to expand their coaching staff.
“I wouldn’t dismiss anything other than maybe bigger coaching staff. I’m not sure that that’s the answer. Our coaching staff has grown, and the size of staffs have continued to grow around the league. So I don’t think we’re an outlier as far as that’s concerned,” team owner Art Rooney II said in January, per PennLive’s Nick Farabaugh. “I just don’t see that holding us back. I don’t think that’s our problem.”
Smith now gets his first shot at the professional level after working his way up the ranks from the high school level. He’ll work the NFL’s version of the coaching staff intern, which consists of a range of responsibilities such as analyzing film, scouting opposing teams and doing whatever the rest of Tomlin’s staff needs. It’s a solid first gig for Smith, who attended Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh before embarking on his coaching journey.

Smith also played defensive back at Maryland.
Pittsburgh’s addition of Smith wasn’t the only coaching staff hire made this offseason. The Steelers also hired Scott McCurley as the inside linebackers coach — to replace Aaron Curry, now of the New York Jets — and Gerald Alexander as the defensive backs coach — to replace Grady Brown, now of the New Orleans Saints.
