Pirates Option Promising Young Pitcher To Minor Leagues

Thomas Harrington has 10.13 ERA

Thomas Harrington is headed to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced they had optioned the promising young pitcher on Thursday, with a corresponding move to be made at some point before the start of their series with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.

Harrington, 23, was a first-round pick of the club in 2022, made one start and one relief appearance during his short stint in the major leagues. Pittsburgh was clearly underwhelmed with his performance, as he allowed nine earned runs in eight total innings — though he did earn a save in his relief outing.

Pittsburgh has been busy making big-time moves involving Harrington, as he earned the call on April 1 after catcher Jason Delay was designated for assignment and veteran pitcher David Bednar was sent down to Indy.

It’s been a weird start for the Buccos.
