Pirates Trade Veteran Catcher To Struggling NL Club After DFA

Jason Delay was a 2017 fourth-round pick by Pittsburgh

The Pirates didn’t play a baseball game Thursday, but they still were plenty busy.

In addition to adding outfielder Alexander Canario to its 26-man roster and optioning infielder/outfielder Ji Hwan Bae to Triple-A Indianapolis, Pittsburgh swung a trade. Mere days after designating Jason Delay for assignment, the Pirates traded the veteran catcher to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash considerations, the club announced.

Delay had been with the Pirates organization since 2017 when the organization drafted him in the fourth round. The Texas native made his MLB debut with Pittsburgh in June 2022 and went on to play 134 games with the Bucs over the last three seasons. The 30-year-old wasn’t able to crack Derek Shelton’s Opening Day roster, though, as the catcher spots were occupied by Joey Bart and Endy Rodríguez.

The Braves announced Delay was optioned to Double-A Columbus upon the trade. Drake Baldwin and Chadwick Tromp currently are the catchers on Atlanta’s active roster.
