Thomas Harrington made his MLB debut Tuesday, but the Pirates pitching prospect looked a bit different at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Tampa Bay Rays spoiled the 23-year-old’s debut when they scored six runs off seven hits against the right-hander. Harrington pitched four innings and recorded two strikeouts and four walks. However, he was still in good spirits after taking a big step in his baseball career.
One notable aspect of the pitcher’s debut was his clean-shaven look. It looked like Harrington would join Paul Skenes and Jared Jones in the facial hair club, and he offered a hilarious explanation for the cosmetic change.
“I messed up trimming it, so it had to go, I guess,” Harrington told SportsNet Pittsburgh’s Hannah Mears on Wednesday.
The new look even surprised Harrington’s fiancée, who was a fan of the mustache, according to the 2022 first-round pick.

There should be plenty of time for the top prospect to grow his facial hair back as he hopes to bounce back in his next start.
