The Pittsburgh Steelers might be one step closer to landing their most-desired free agent.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings will not pursue Aaron Rodgers to replace Sam Darnold. Instead, they will move ahead with 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy as the presumed starter. That narrows down the field of Rodgers’ suitors to Pittsburgh and the New York Giants.
The NFL insider added that there was “ongoing dialogue” between the Steelers, Rodgers’ agent and the four-time All-Pro quarterback.
Pelissero reported that the Steelers were willing to wait for the 41-year-old to decide on his next team, and if Rodgers signed elsewhere, they would explore other options, including Mason Rudolph, who returned to the franchise in free agency this offseason. Pittsburgh reportedly met with quarterback prospect Jalen Milroe, so it does seem to have backup plans prepared.
The Steelers prioritized Rodgers instead of trying to re-sign Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, and it drew mixed reactions from fans and their star players. However, Pittsburgh hopes its efforts will pay off in the long run.
