Steelers Captain Growing ‘Tired’ Of QB Candidate Aaron Rodgers

'I don't need any of that crap'

The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t fully sold on free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Steelers defensive captain Cameron Heyward, in fact, is “tired” of the waiting game that’s come with pursuing the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer. Heyward has spent all of his 14 seasons in the league with Pittsburgh, playing alongside quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph, Kenny Pickett, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields throughout his tenure.

Now at 35 years old, Heyward has very little patience for Rodgers as the ex-New York Jets quarterback weighs his options before making a final decision — the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings have also been linked.

“I wanna play football. I’m tired of talking about the quarterback situation,” Heyward said on his “Not Just Football” podcast. “I’d rather have it done. I don’t know what ends up happening. I don’t know, man. I’m ready to move on into free agency. There’s too much going on.”

Heyward added: “I ain’t doing that darkness retreat. I don’t need any of that crap. Like, either you wanna be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t. It’s that simple. That’s the pitch. Like, if you want me to recruit, that’s the recruiting pitch. Pittsburgh Steelers, if you wanna be part of it, so be it. If you don’t, no skin off my back.”

Rodgers officially became unemployed once the Jets lost faith in the aging 18-year veteran, who last appeared in the Super Bowl in 2011 and suffered a torn Achilles two years ago. New York cut ties with Rodgers in February after the two sides met and the organization informed him they didn’t have an interest in retaining him. The market interest in Rodgers was predictable, as was the approach Rodgers would demonstrate while negotiating with teams.

It might help the now-washed quarterback down in the count against Father Time, but it’s not doing Rodgers any favors within the Steelers locker room — his potential new home.

Pittsburgh has expressed its commitment to getting the franchise back on track. The team added star wide receiver DK Metcalf, pairing the two-time Pro Bowler alongside George Pickens. They also reunited with Rudolph on a two-year contract, giving head coach Mike Tomlin a backup option if the Rodgers pursuit, or any other, doesn’t fall through.

With Fields now a member of the Jets and Wilson weighing his open-market options, Heyward and the Steeles are running out of options for a go-to signal caller.
