NFL Rumors: Steelers Meet With Intriguing NFL Draft QB Prospect

Steelers could take a quarterback in the NFL draft

With rumors swirling around the Steelers possibly signing four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh continues to explore other options at the quarterback spot.

That includes the Steelers doing their due diligence on quarterback prospects in next month’s NFL draft.

NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday night that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, general manager Omar Khan and quarterbacks coach Tom Arth had dinner with Jalen Milroe ahead of the former Alabama quarterback’s pro day.

That’s quite the contingent to meet with Milroe, perhaps illustrating the high level of interest they have in the 22-year-old, who started 26 games for the Crimson Tide over the last two seasons. Milroe, a dual-threat signal-caller, completed 64.3% of his passes for 2,844 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this past season. He also ran for 726 yards with an eye-popping 20 touchdowns on the ground.

The Steelers in all likelihood wouldn’t need to use the No. 21 overall pick on Milroe. He is projected to be a Day 2 selection, which could make it tricky for him to land with the Steelers since they don’t have a second-round pick. Pittsburgh does own the 83rd overall pick, which comes in the third round.

NFL draft guru Lance Zierlein had an interesting player comp for Milroe as he likened him to former Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart.

“Milroe is an explosive athlete who is very capable outside the pocket, but he lacks accuracy, touch and decision-making when he’s inside the pocket,” Zierlein wrote. “A lack of anticipation and timing leads to interceptions and contested throws to intermediate areas of the field. He has an NFL arm, but he might need to fine-tune his footwork and delivery to improve accuracy on all three levels.”
