Paul Skenes took MLB by storm last year, and the Pirates ace earned a distinct honor for the first time in his career.
Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton confirmed Saturday that Skenes will be the team’s Opening Day starter, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The Pirates released a video of Shelton telling Skenes the big news. Shelton showed the 22-year-old Bubba Chandler pitching in the “spring breakout” game and pointed out that was where Skenes was last year. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year quickly ascended from prospect to face of the franchise, but he was his humble self after learning he’d be the Opening Day starter.
Pittsburgh plays the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park on March 27 to kick off the 2025 MLB campaign. The Pirates face the Yankees on March 4 at PNC Park for their home opener.
