Penguins Make Slew Of Roster Moves Ahead Of Golden Knights Clash

Tommy Novak and Ryan Shea are sidelined

Before the Penguins began their five-game homestand with a clash against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh recalled a pair of players from the AHL on an emergency basis, the club announced.

Defenseman Ryan Shea is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury, forward Tommy Novak is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and defenseman P.O. Joseph, who was injured in Pittsburgh’s loss against the Boston Bruins on March 1, remains week-to-week with an upper-body injury, per head coach Mike Sullivan. The Penguins recalled defenseman Sebastian Aho and forward Matt Nieto from Wilkes-Barre Scranton.

Aho signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh last summer, but has not suited up in NHL action yet this season. The 29-year-old blue liner has missed most of the AHL season with three separate injuries. He’s skated in 17 games for Wilkes-Barre Scranton, registering seven assists in that span. Aho began his career with the New York Islanders, scoring 11 goals and adding 30 helpers in 190 games.

Nieto has played in 31 NHL games this season with Pittsburgh, tallying one goal and one assist. He is in the final season of the two-year, $1.8 million contract. The veteran left wing has 87 goals and 119 assists across 704 games with the Penguins, Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks.
